Buffalo Bills draft ‘playmaker’ C.J. Spiller

Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix understands that the team he now runs has needs at a number of positions.

And his hope over the next couple of days is that he can find some players in the NFL draft who will fill those spots.

But when it came time to execute the ninth overall pick in the first round Thursday night, Nix could not ignore what he believes to be the most pressing issue for the Bills.

Stroud ruled out vs. Jaguars

Buffalo Bills starting defensive tackle Marcus Stroud has been ruled out because of a knee injury, meaning the NFL’s worst run defense could be without both starting defensive tackles against Jacksonville this weekend.

Kyle Williams has missed three games because of a knee injury, and was listed as questionable by interim head coach Perry Fewell on Friday. Williams has practiced sparingly this weekend.

The Bills (3-6) have only two other defensive tackles on their roster — reserves Spencer Johnson and John McCargo.

Their defense is allowing an NFL-worst 173 yards rushing this season. Buffalo prepares to face the run-happy Jaguars led by Maurice Jones-Drew, who’s tied for fourth in the league with 860 yards rushing and has scored seven of his 12 touchdowns in the past four games.

Dungy: Vick could end up with Bills

Tony Dungy says Michael Vick could potentially wind up in Buffalo, which he says previously discussed signing the quarterback.

Dungy has served as an adviser to Vick since the Super Bowl-winning coach retired from the Colts after last season. Now a commentator for NBC, Dungy confirmed during the pregame show Sunday night before Philadelphia hosted Dallas that the Bills and Vick “talked originally” when Vick was searching for a team after serving 18 months in federal prison for running a dogfighting ring.

The Eagles signed Vick to a $1.6 million contract for 2009, with a team option for the second year at $5.2 million. But he has played sparingly.

“I told Michael to just worry about this year,” Dungy said. “It’s technically up to Philadelphia. If they want him back, he has to stay there. If they don’t, there are some teams looking for quarterbacks: Cleveland, St. Louis and Washington.

Bills’ Hardy will join the crowd

The Buffalo Bills’ logjam at wide receiver will soon get a little more crowded.

The team is expected to add second-year man James Hardy to the 53-man roster by Wednesday. That’s when the 21-day window in which he can practice with the team while still on the reserve/physically unable to perform list ends.

Hardy has been practicing fully since Oct. 21.

“James has done a real nice job,” Bills coach Dick Jauron said this week. “We have that 21-day window, and my understanding is that it runs through next Wednesday. So we’ll keep looking at it and look at our roster and see what we can do and what we think at that point. We’ll run it right up to that time.”

Buffalo Bills quiet on status of Edwards

The status of Bills quarterback Trent Edwards remained status quo on Monday, meaning his condition will not be updated publicly until at least Wednesday.

Coach Dick Jauron said Edwards was able to fly back from New York with the team Sunday night, but he had no more details on the concussion Edwards suffered in the second quarter of Buffalo’s 16-13 victory over the Jets.
“We’ll take that day to day and see how he comes out of this thing,” Jauron said.

Edwards was replaced by backup Ryan Fitzpatrick, who helped lead Buffalo back from a 13-3 halftime deficit.

Edwards’ status uncertain after head injury

Bills quarterback Trent Edwards requires further evaluation after sustaining the second concussion of his NFL career. The starter’s status is uncertain for the game at Carolina this weekend.

Coach Dick Jauron said Monday that Edwards was healthy enough to travel home with the team after he was knocked out in the second quarter of a 16-13 overtime win at the New York Jets on Sunday. “We’ll take that day to day and see how he comes out of this thing,” Jauron said.

Bills players are off until Wednesday.

Edwards also sustained a concussion in a loss at Arizona on Oct. 5.
